One hundred and seventy years have already passed since the House began working leather… by hand, then and always. Skilled and generous hands passed on their beautiful trade from one generation to the next. Thierry Hermès was the first to work the skins.
He was a harness-maker, then a saddle-maker.
SIX GENERATIONS OF CRAFTSMEN
His descendants saw the arrival of the automobile and understood the transportation revolution…When horses turned into horsepower, Hermès became a leatherworker. Then a jeweller, a designer of silk scarves and ties, an inventor of accessories, a perfumer, a watchmaker… yet forever a craftsman. Traces of the founding métier can be seen in all the House objects. The craftsman's hand may keep the memory of the original gestures alive, but it has never stopped serving innovation.
